Emily's Ghost
Hello, my name is Emily. I am a ghost. Sit and read my story. I think you will like it. I was born somewhere in Iowa. I lived with my Mama, Papa, and 3 brothers. My Mama and Papa were immigrants from Germany. They meant each other there. Together they lived there until life started to get hard. So they found someone to teach them English for 25¢ a lesson. After about a month of English lessons they packed up everything and left Germany. They went on a 3 week trip on a boat then went to Ellis Island and were accepted into America. They moved to somewhere in Iowa, they guessed, and settled in the prairie grassland. They cleared a little of it, built a fence and took some of the wild cows and pigs for livestock. They also cleared a little area for our garden and our log house and started their family, which was me first then my 3 brothers. My brother’s names are Billy Jr., Samuel, and Bobby. My mama schooled them and Papa taught them how to farm and herd livestock. We lived there for most of my life. Then we had to move, because Papa wasn’t making enough money for him to go to market and buy things we needed at the house, or things we couldn’t grow. So we moved to the nearest city, which was Sioux City, Iowa, when I was 15. I was enrolled in a school there and caught on to learning very fast. My brothers were about 12, 5, and 2 so Billy and Samuel went to school there to, Bobby was to young. It was a law that girls could only go to school until they were out of high school. After that they were supposed to meet some man and move on and start a family. I didn’t like this and neither did any of the other girls, I’m sure. So on the last day of high school I went to a college manager and asked him if any girl had ever gone to college there. He said no. I asked him why and he said that the only thing women are good for is house work and children. This made me mad. So I dressed like a boy and started to go to college. It wasn’t long until they found out that I wasn’t a boy and kicked me out. I wouldn’t let that hold me back. So I tried again, they found out and kicked me out, again. They said if I tried to come in again I would get locked in jail for the rest of my life. I didn’t want that so I decided to start a family, I thought I was ready now. So I married a boy, whose name was Johnny, I had meet at school. Johnny seemed like a nice boy and we had known each other since kindergarten. He was always nice to me and we had been going out for maybe 2 years before we got married. His mom and dad liked my mama and papa so they really pushed us to get married. So we moved out maybe a mile out of Sioux City and started to farm, like my mama and papa. We started a family with 4 kids, Kristy, Joan, Lillian, and Little Sonny. One thing that I didn’t know about Johnny is that he loves to hit. He used to hit me a lot. And every time the girls would cry and run to Mama and Papa’s house while I calmed him down, or until I ran there to. Then Papa would get his shot gun and chase him out of him yard. If they weren’t home then I had the girls go in to a shed behind the house and lock the door. Then I would go and unlock the door and let them out, when their dad was gone. There was this one time that I was sleeping and it was maybe 3:00 in the morning. I was suddenly awakened by a loud ‘BANG’. I went and tried to see were it could have came from. I thought maybe it was a cat, because we have 4 of them. So I went up stairs and looked to see if it was cats. When I was on my way downstairs I saw Johnny and he had Lillian in a head lock and had a gun to her head. He was threatening to shoot her. You could tell he was drunk but he really meant it. So I acted like I didn’t even know he was there and grabbed a pillow. I told him to close his eyes. When I finally got him to close them I pulled Lillian out and put the pillow back in his arms. I pushed him out the back door and into the creek behind our house. I ran into the house and locked him out. It was stupid things like that, that made me leave him and I took my girls with me. He was very mad and tried to track me down. One time he found Kristy and took her and wouldn’t give her back to me until I came and said that I was sorry that I had left and moved back in with him. I went to his house with what looked like a lot of big bags that had my cloths in it. I got Kristy, and ran. We ran as fast as we could. We even ran a different way to our house so we could kind of cut him off. We almost got lost until we found the main road. No matter wich way we took he was he fallowed us all the way there. We were maybe a mile away from our house and he was so close to grabbing Kristy I had to pull her in front of me so he couldn’t get her and instead get me. But we ran faster than him, so he couldn’t reach me. We ran into the house and locked the door. I told Kristy and the other three girls to run and hide in our shed behind the house until their daddy had left. When they were finally gone I let Johnny in. He was furious and he had a knife. He tried to stab me a couple of times, but he missed. I got him on the floor and got the knife away from him. I was turned around trying to open the window so I could throw the knife out the window. But he grabbed another knife out of the drawer and stabbed me in the back. After that all I can remember is seeing a bright light and then I was wearing beautiful white gown and I was surrounded by big puffy clouds. Behind me was a big golden gate. I also could see down on the earth and I could see me lying on the floor of my house and blood was gushing out of my back were the knife was. I assumed I was dead, because I could see all of this. I could see into the shed and my girls were all sitting in there and Little Sonny was crying, because she was scared that her dad was going to get her and hurt her. They all had worried looks on their faces. I wondered how they will ever get a long with out me, and I only wished that I hadn’t have died. Their daddy was walking around the yard yelling, “Girls were are you? Daddy’s here and mom is gone. It’s ok, time to come out now.” He walked over to the shed and opened the door. They all screamed and tried to run away from him, but he got them. He took the girls and took them to his house. As time passed by they were abused by their father and their living conditions were so bad. It hurt me so much to see that happening to them. By this time women could go to college. But their dad never let them out of the house. That was because he didn’t want to get caught with them and get them taken away. If they were to go out of the house they would get 3 hits and no supper for 2 nights. He was never home and Kristy had to raise a family while she was only 15. After a long time I watched the girls grow old. Now I come to the reason of this story. I want to hurt Johnny the way he hurt my kids. So I am looking for him and I have only one thing to say to him, “Johnny you are DEAD!”
