In spring 2008, Dr. Rangira Bea Gallimore visited Morningside as part of the Dr. R. Franklin Terry Women’s Studies Lecture and Faculty Development Series. Gallimore, an associate professor of romance languages and literature at the University of Missouri-Columbia, presented a lecture on women who survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Morningside faculty also attended a workshop on how to teach about such challenging topics as rape, incest, genocide and war.
During her visit, the Women’s Studies group, Morningside’s student government, and the campus community at large raised enough money to buy 3 and 1/2 cows for Step Up! American Association for Rwandan Women.
Gallimore founded Step Up! in 2004 in order to help Rwandan women find jobs, food and school supplies; and to work to meet their mental health needs as a result of the genocide.
A single cow will give a family a valuable income source. Gallimore just returned from Rwanda where, in addition to other much needed supplies, she delivered the three cows—named "Morningside," "Sioux City," and "Terry--”donated by the Morningside College community.
