American Studies. From UVA, includes links for hypertext editions of American literature and museum exhibits.


American Transcendentalism Web. Excellent resource for critical and historical information on American transcendentalism and key authors such as Emerson and Thoreau, developed by Professor Ann Woodlief at VCU.


Bibliography. Listing of bibliographies and resources for studies of American 19th and 20th century authors from Literary History.com.  Many of the article citations are linked to full text versions.

Dickinson Electronic Archives. Place to start when looking for resources on Emily Dickinson; developed by Dickinson scholar Martha Nell Smith.

Dickinson and Photography. Fascinating hypertext essay by scholar Marta Werner on Dickinson's poetic interest in the new medium of photography.

Translating Emily. A hypertext essay that looks at the issue of digitally re-presenting Dickinson's poetry (fascicle 16) in its manuscript form.


Frederick Douglass Papers. Primary archive for Douglass' papers, including links to additional resources on slave narratives and abolition.


Electronic Journals. E-Journals available through Morningside College library, including American Literature and American Transcendental Quarterly.

Emerson Central. Links to electronic texts of all of Emerson's published work, with ability to keyword search.

Emerson's School. Emerson resources and (in progress) hypertext essays on Emerson from students in Dr. Meehan's capstone seminar: "Emerson's School."

Emerson Society. Offers links to sites for the study of Emerson, presented by the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society.

RWE.org. Includes electronic editions of most of his work, with the ability to keyword search.


Etymology. A good online etymology dictionary, with links to other language reference matter.


Benjamin Franklin. Resource that includes full electronic text of his Autobiography and links to other Franklin sites.


Fuller Society. A society of Margaret Fuller scholars and fans, includes bibliography, links, and a listserv.


Gonzaga: American Literature Sites. A web of resources developed by Donna Campbell at Gonzaga University; includes a useful historical timeline as well as author links.


Hawthorne Society. Homepage for Nathaniel Hawthorne society, including links for web resources.


Literary History. A Gateway for American literary history articles and author resources available on the web.


Lynch: American Literary Resources. Links to gateways and individual authors in American literature, developed by Rutgers English professor Jack Lynch.


Melville Society. A collection of Melville resources and hypertext (still in progress), including an email discussion group named 'Ishmail.'


Morningside College Library: Online Databases and Catalogs. The place to start when looking for an article or book, or even a topic--before you go to Google.


Online Books Page: American Literature. Listing of numerous books for American literary studies (primary and secondary texts) that are available in electronic format on the web.


PAL. Perspectives in American Literature, a research and reference guide (including web links and bibliographies) for all of American literature, from early to contemporary, developed by a professor at CSU.

The Thoreau Reader. Rich site of links and resources for studying Thoreau, connected to Thoreau Society.

Thoreau Society. The central site for Thoreau on the web. Extensive links for both scholarship and environmental resources related to Thoreau.

The Writings of Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau's publications and manuscripts, including transcripts from his journal and a view of his handwriting.


Voice of the Shuttle. An authoritative and leading gateway resource referring readers to links and resources for studying literature and critical theory. A must-use resource for web searching in this field.


Webster's American Dictionary, 1828 edition. Enables you to look up words and their meaning as recorded in 1828 and again in the 1913 edition.


Whitman Hypertext Archive. The best and most extensive site for electronic resources on Whitman, developed by Whitman scholars Ed Folsom and Ken Price. Check out the archive of Whitman photos.


Writing Links. Resources and links for writing essays, grammar guides, etc, developed by Dr. Meehan and his writing students.
