Our Philosophy of Theatre Education

We believe

that an education in theatre should be broadly based but allow students to be focused in their studies, too. To that end, the Morningside experience requires majors to participate in all aspects of theatre even as they develop unique strengths in a core area.  Our faculty and staff epitomize this philosophy, for in addition to their areas of specialization, each is an experienced actor, director, and designer, and all have worked in professional Equity theatres.

We believe

that an education in theatre is characterized by creative engagement. That's why the Morningside experience encourages all students to participate in theatre, regardless of their major or class standing. Whether a freshman or a senior, a business major or an English major, everyone is welcome.

Students from all majors participate in productions, including the recent, Little Shop of Horrors.

We believe

that an education in theatre prepares students for life-long learning. Because of their Morningside experience, theatre graduates are working in film and television production, management, and education. They are pursuing graduate work in directing, acting, and design. Our alumni have started their own theatres, worked on Broadway, and toured productions all over the U.S. All have one thing in common--they are passionate about learning!

Our Philosophy in Action

Little Shop of Horrors The department organizes productions around a four-year cycle in which we move through the major periods and styles of dramatic literature so that students work on a wide range of plays. A Doll's House
The theatre curriculum includes courses emphasizing the inter-dependence of all aspects of production: acting, directing, and technical theatre. Students also benefit from field placements with regional professional companies as well as experience in on-campus productions. Competitive auditions are open to all members of the college community, regardless of major.

Productions are presented in Klinger-Neal Theatre which features variable performance space allowing for proscenium, thrust, and arena staging. A computerized lighting system enhances the students' wide range of performance, design and technical opportunities.
