“ Running Bear,” said his father.

“ Yes,” replied Running Bear.

“ Do you want to go hunting?”

“ Sure.”

                                                          The Modern Running Bear, ME!

Running Bear and Brown Tooth (his father) started to gather the supplies they would need to go hunting. They took their bows and arrows. Running Bear made sure his arrowheads were sharp.

Brown Tooth also took the stone knife he had made himself.

Today they would walk to the hunting grounds where they would only kill one deer. On their way there they saw rabbits and squirrels. After a few minutes of walking Brown Tooth said, “Here we are.”

They both climbed a tree Later Brown Tooth said, “ Look over there, a buck big enough to feed the whole tribe.

Running Bear slowly climbed down the tree. He crept towards the deer. He pulled his arrow out of the quiver and then reached casually. He pulled back on the string. He released. The arrow flew off the string and into the deer. “Yes! He thought to himself. With pride Brown Tooth awarded him the Arrowhead Necklace of Awareness.

When they got back to camp his mother cooked the deer, and they all ate it. The custom of the tribe was to share with all as they honored the deer.

The next day he slept until the sun first peeked over the grassy prairie. He decided to take a walk. The cold dew and grass came in-between his toes.

He got back to camp and every one was up. They started their chants to the sun. They were special chants just for the Lakota Sioux Tribe.

Later he went exploring. He was half way into the woods when he saw a mountain lion. He started to run. He ran so fast it was as if his feet weren’t even touching the ground. He came back yelling and screaming.  Brown Tooth said, “ What is the matter?”

“I saw a mountain lion!”

Young Running Bear heard some words of wisdom that morning.

Stay away from those things!
