Basic Prelicensure Track

The Department of Nursing Education offers a four-year baccalaureate nursing program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The curriculum is designed with courses in the liberal arts, the sciences and nursing to enhance one's knowledge and understanding of professional nursing practice. The Department of Nursing provides a learning environment that cultivates the development of:

  • Personal and professional responsibility
  • Ethical leadership
  • A commitment to life-long learning
  • A foundation for the pursuance of an advanced role in nursing

During the first year, basic track students take support courses in the sciences and liberal arts. Learning is focused on building a solid foundation for the nursing major. Early in the second semester of the freshman year, students are invited to apply for admission into the nursing major.

Nursing courses are taken in the sophomore, junior, and senior years in conjunction with remaining degree requirements. Nursing courses are sequenced to build on previous knowledge, taking students from simple through complex nursing situations. Professional nursing practice requires skill in critical thinking, decision-making, management, research, and the technologies of nursing. The nursing curriculum presents the theory, science, and art of nursing and encompasses the care of persons of all ages from the unborn child to the aged. All major specialty areas of health care are introduced with practical (clinical) experiences taking place in a variety of health care agencies and settings.

Upon successful completion of all requirements for graduation, the student graduates with a BSN degree and is eligible to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The nursing education program at Morningside College is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing (Riverpoint Business Park, 400 S.W. 8th Street, Suite B, Des Moines, IA 50309-4685, 515-281-3255, www.state.ia.us/nursing) and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission-NLNAC (61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006, 212-363-5555, ext. 153, Fax 212-812-0390, www.nlnac.org).
