Morningside kept the energy up as they defeated Whitworth University 80-59 in the Sunday matinee to give head coach Jamie Sale his 300th career win. Once again, the Mustangs shot nicely from the field at 50.9 percent, including a 12-24 showing from beyond the 3-point arc.
Brittany Alfredson, a sophomore guard from Moville, IA led the Mustangs with an impressive career-high 16 points, while Nelson added a season’s high 14 tallies. Leslie Trask and Worden got into the mix, both finishing in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Katie Sponder did some work on the boards grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs with a 34-26 advantage, and also dealt a career-high seven assists in the meantime. Worden also picked up a season’s high eight assists in the victory.
In the Mustangs most recent victory against Sioux Falls, Worden came up huge scoring 27 points, with six assists and six steals. Morningside never trailed after going on a 12-0 run to start the game. The closest the foes came was within eight at the intermission, 33-25. In the second half, it was all Morningside as they went on a 20-6 scoring run to seal the deal.
The Mustangs forced 25 turnovers in a stellar defensive performance, holding the Cougars to a 30.9 percent shooting performance. Morningside also edged Sioux Falls on the boards by a 45-38 advantage, led by Alfredson and Williamson with six rebounds, respectively. The win raised the Mustangs season record to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the GPAC.
The Mustangs will get back to action this Saturday in a road match against Dordt College in Sioux Center. The Defenders are 0-2 in the GPAC and 4-6 overall. Dordt is coming off a 55-66 loss to Northwestern after defeating College of Saint Mary, 82-59.
