The Department of Mass Communication offers a B.A. that prepares students for a variety of careers in media and business, or for advanced study in graduate school. The Departments of Mass Communication, Business and Art together offer interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degrees in Advertising and Corporate Communication. Students in these majors take courses in all three disciplines in order to prepare for careers in media management, advertising, public relations or marketing.
In an era of convergence, with television, radio, and print becoming more alike than different, it is important for mass communication students to have broad knowledge and experience. Rather than focusing on prescribed media tracks, mass comm students consult with faculty to develop a program of study that meets their academic and career goals. During the course of the program they are encouraged to experiment and experience all the media opportunities Morningside has to offer.
Student-run campus media -- a radio station, newspaper and video production studio -- provide numerous hands–on learning opportunities. They also allow students to develop leadership skills as they make daily content, programming and creative decisions. The department's small size also gives professors time to advise students, work with them on independent projects, and help them develop programs of study that meet their academic and career goals.
As part of the Mass Communication B.A. students complete an internship. Sioux City is a media–rich community which means our students, through internships and parttime jobs, have the opportunity to work and learn from media professionals in television, radio, advertising, public relations and print media.
Writing Endorsement: Mass Communication majors focus on proficiency in writing that is clear, concise and informative. All majors are required to pass a written proficiency to build fluency and critical thinking. Majors must write a research paper on a topic of their own choosing within the structure of a 300 or 400 level course. The paper must embody a comprehensive, critical overview of a significant topic, historical period, movement, or figure in communications. |
