Morningside's Department of Mass Communication educates communication professionals and scholars. We seek to prepare students for careers in communication fields and to teach students about the role of mass communication in society.
Students choose from the B.A. in Mass Communication and interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degrees in Corporate Communication and Advertising. All three majors prepare students through classroom study, applied work with college media, and internships. Our graduates enjoy careers in media and business and succeed in advanced degree programs.
Broad knowledge in the liberal arts is essential to understanding and interpreting contemporary communication issues. Majors are encouraged to develop their interest in the liberal arts, including political science, English, art, history, and the natural sciences. Mass comm majors often double major in order to combine their media interest with an additional area of expertise.
Mass Communcation majors also complete an internship. The experience is invaluable to students, allowing them to learn from professionals as they put their classroom knowledge into practice. Morningside students have interned in corporate offices and non-profit charitable organizations as well as small and large market communication media.
Sioux City is a media–rich environment, with radio and television stations, public relations departments, corporate communication offices, advertising agencies, newspapers, and magazines. Siouxland, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota have benefited the most from Morningside interns, but majors are free to explore internship opportunities across the country, from Washington, D.C., to New York City to Alaska to Los Angeles.
