As the NAIA college wrestling season’s start fast approaches, the Morningside Mustangs team, coached by Tim Jager, has found there way into the preseason rankings. After an up and down season a year ago that led to a 9-6 dual team record the polls have Morningside sitting at 17th in the nation.
That ranking has the Mustangs as the second best team in the conference, behind only Dana, who is placed up at 8th in the nation. Northwestern also cracked the top 20 sitting just behind Morningside and sitting at 18th.
The Mustangs received their ranking due in large part to three members of the team’s lineup finding themselves in the top 12 in the individual’s rankings. Senior Joe Lockett was able to sneak into the rankings as the 12th best projected wrestler at 197 pounds while Juniors Ben Knight (ranked 8th at 157 pounds) and Cody Dennis (4th at 125 pounds) found themselves in the top ten in the nation.
The Mustang wrestlers will not get to wrestle in front of the home fans until after the semester break as they are scheduled to compete in seven duals and three tournaments before the break all of which away from Morningside. The first competition Morningside faces will be at the Dakota Wesleyan open in Mitchell, South Dakota on November 14th.
The first chance that Morningside will have to see their wrestlers at home will be against William Penn on January 22, which will be the last chance for the team to get live action in before the conference tournament, which will also be at Morningside as the Mustangs will be the host team.
At that point, the Mustangs will be competing in Sioux City until the regional tournament as their only away meet will be a tournament hosted by cross town rival Briar Cliff. (Nov. 5)
