Morningside College’s Greek Council is asking for the campus’s help to make this holiday season better for those in the Siouxland area. The Greek Council is sponsoring their 2nd annual campus-wide food drive.
Last year, the Greek Council collected over 300 pounds of food for the Siouxland Food Bank. This year, they hope to double that number with over 600 pounds of food. This competitive food drive came to life last year when the Council was looking for an activity that involved the entire campus but also benefited the community.
“Thanksgiving is a great holiday when families come together, spend quality time together, and share a great meal,” said Stephanie Campbell, senior and member of the Greek Council. “This holiday isn’t so easy and enjoyable for some. As a group, we wanted to unite to help make this great day a little more special for people in need.
In this competition, the group or organization that donates the most food will receive a pizza party courtesy of the Greek Council. The Council hopes that by making this food drive a competition, a larger number of campus organizations will become involved in the effort.
“It is an excellent and simple way for any college student to get involved in a really good cause that helps their community,” said Andrew Gerodias, junior and member of the Greek Council.
The collection dates for food are November 6, 13, and 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Student Government Office. They will also be accepting donations from individuals and groups not participating in the competition.
“Each Greek group will be participating; however, we can’t do this alone! We’re asking the groups on campus to come together and donate food to help people over the holiday,” Campbell said.
The Greek Council consists of members of each of the three major Greek organizations on campus: ACACIA, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Delta Sigma Phi. Each organization elected three members to serve on the Greek Council and help with its activities, including the food drive. All of the Council members worked together to create this event and to gain as many participants as possible.
