Gary Fridley,
Violin, Catholic School String Program

Mr. Gary Fridley studied violin and viola with Leo Kucinski while a student at Morningside College. After completing his degree, he pursued post graduate studies at the University of Iowa where he studied violin with Leopold LaFosse. He also studied violin at Morningside with Loren Jakey, Howard Reitz and Isaac Ostrow. Mr. Fridley has also studied the Suzuki Method of String Instruction with Shinichi Suzuki himself at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

Mr. Fridley teaches violin and viola including early strings, private lessons, Suzuki strings and is teacher and director of the Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools string program and the Siouxland Suzuki Talent Education Playdays, both of which are affiliated with the leo Kucinski Academy of Music. Mr. Fridley taught for 31 years in the Sioux City Community Schools as a string teacher and orchestra director. He was also the orchestra director and string specialist for the Cherokee, IA Community Schools and the Yankton, SD Community Schools for one year each. Gary was on the staff of the Wayne State College Summer Music Camp as Orchestra Director for 13 years and was a member of the South Dakota Symphony for over eight years. Mr. Fridley is currently a 41-year member of the Sioux City Symphony, a 30-year member of the Cherokee Symphony, and has maintained a private strings studio for over 25 years in Sioux City. He is currently the violinist and director of the SilverStringS Quartet and organist at Mayflower United Church of Christ in Sioux City. His Silverstrings Quartet serves as the first chair players for the Tri-Annual Spencer Messiah in Spencer, Iowa. The quartet has given public performances for the lakes art center in Okoboji, IA and for Sioux City Chamber Music in Sioux City.

 

 

Marlene Grossman,

Marlene Grossman earned a Bachelor of Music degree from theSherwood Music School in Chicago. Mrs. Grossman also studied at Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas and Chadron State Teachers College in Nebraska. Her teachers include Herbert Renison, Madame Celia Horworth, Isidor Buckhalter, and Sr. Mary Chrysystem. She has been a long-time teacher in the Sioux City area where her students have won Siouxland Introduces competitions, the Siouxland Youth Symphony Concerto Competition and the Cherokee Symphony competition. Marlene is the widow of John Grossman, for whom the Grossman Scholarship is named.
