KMSC Technology No student radio station can stay on the cutting edge of today’s broadcast audio technology– it’s just too expensive and it comes out too quickly. But KMSC more than holds its own when it comes to having “the good stuff!” Major equipment upgrades have been undertaken in recent years thanks to generous support from the Morningside Administration and Morningside Student Government as well as increased underwriting revenue. Recent additions include: - Audiotronics 12-channel on-air mixing board - Mackie 16-channel production mixing board - Orban FM stereo processing hardware - Emergency Alert System receiver - Gateway desktop and laptop computers - Sony amplfier, CD players, and speakers for remotes - Sony and Sharp field and studio minidisk recorders - Marantz flashcard recorder (this is really cool!) - Shure studio, field, and music recording microphones - Comrex field and studio digital telephone units - JKAudio telephone hybrid/sports mixer - AudioTechnica wireless microphone system - Alesis and Lexicon digital effects processors - Adobe Audition audio production software - Wavecart audio playback software KMSC is now able to broadcast live in stereo from anywhere a broadband internet connection is available. The station is also using the internet to “webcast” its programming so that students, parents, alumni and others outside the Sioux City area can receive KMSC’s signal via the internet. Webcast listener email has been received from as far away as Germany and the webcast regularly draws more than a thousand listeners each month. The newest KMSC technology is something called “codec” (code/decode). Codec makes use of one of the oldest electronic technologies – plain old telephone service – in combination with some of the newest – digital encode/decode and digital compression – to deliver a near studio quality signal from anywhere there is a telephone. The new codec units are now being used for most KMSC play-by-play broadcasts of Mustang athletics as well as other remote programming from places outside the KMSC studios. / back to About KMSC |
