Employment opportunities for international students in the United States are very limited. There are two main kinds of employment that an F-1 student may obtain:

ON-CAMPUS and OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

On-campus employment

International students with an F-1 immigration status may work on campus. There is no need for pre-authorization from the immigration agencies.

You may begin your on campus work immediately after you arrive on campus, and it can be on any area of the college. On campus employment does not affect any future authorized off-campus work opportunities.

Off-campus employment

After the completion of 9 months with an F-1 status, international students may apply for off-campus employment. There are 2 main categories of off-campus employment: Optional Practical Training and Curricular Practical Training. Both options require notification and/or approval from the Department of Homeland Security.

:Curricular Practical Training (CPT):

CPT refers to off-campus employment that is an integral part of the established curriculum. To be eligible to apply for CPT a student must be a full-time student for one full academic year and must be in status. The off campus employment must be in the student's field of study. The employment may be full-time or part-time. The student must have an offer of employment from an employer offering work that qualifies as curricular practical training.

:Optional Practical Training (OPT):

There are two types of OPT: before and after completion of course of study.

Optional Practical Training refers to temporary employment for practical training in an area directly related to the student's major area of study. Students that want to apply for optional practical training must be enrolled as full-time students for at least one year. During the academic year, the student may work up to 20 hours per week and full-time during holidays and vacations.

:Severe Economic Hardship:

This F-1 employment benefit is intended for students that confront a financial need, beyond the student's control. The condition causing the severe economic hardship must be an unforeseen circumstance at the time the student applied to the school he or she is currently attending. Also, all other potential employment opportunities must have proven to be insufficient.
