Courses Physics Shack Physics Links Earth Sciences

The term "Physics" is often used to encompass a wide array of subjects.  Earth and space sciences are listed under the Earth Sciences link above, and applied physics and engineering are listed under Engineering (link on the left side-bar).

At Morningside, we offer a choice of programs with various emphases, including

bulletBS Engineering Physics
bulletBS Physics (currently pending approval)
bulletBA Physics
bulletBA Physics Teaching (with Education)
bulletBS Physical Science Teaching (with Chemistry and Education)
bulletBS General Science Teaching (with Biology, Chemistry and Education)

We have developed a general physics sequence, developed on solid educational models, that provides a solid grounding in physics concepts and problem-solving skills.  At Morningside, students take  concept-driven algebra-based physics, followed by the mathematical development of calculus-based physics as a later development.  The latter half of this strategy is very closely tied to the calculus sequence from the Mathematics side of the department.

We are always looking for new methods to help students work through difficult times, whether that be the transition from high school to college, a particular course (e.g. general physics or calculus), or just a busy semester.  Starting Fall, 2005, we will be instituting two new support mechanisms -

bulletA transition program will be established for students with multiple demands on their time.  Physics is one of the most demanding disciplines a student can undertake at college, and that can lead to problems with time management.  The biggest demands we see for incoming students are academics, athletics, and part-time work.  We will be teaming incoming students with peer mentors who have successfully made that transition.
bulletPeer tutoring system - we will be putting together a system of peer tutors.  Upper level tutors (Junior/Senior standing) will be available for assistance with lower level (100-, 200- level) courses, and Lower-level tutors (First-year/Sophomore standing) will be able to observe, and help with community outreach programs.  Along with this program, upper-level students will now be able to lead outreach programs and develop new and exciting demonstrations and activities for the general public.
