CREATIVE WRITING

Courses required for the cluster:

ENGL 210 Creative Non-Fiction (4 credits)
ENGL 281 Writing Poetry and Fiction (4 credits)
ENGL 382 Advanced Poetry Writing (4 credits) OR
ENGL 383 Advanced Fiction Writing (4 credits)

This cluster is perfect for students who love imaginative writing and want to develop their ability to carefully and creatively craft language.

 


THE CLASSICAL AND MEDIEVAL WORLDS

Courses required for the cluster:

The student will choose 12 credit hours from among the following courses. At least one course must be at the 100 or 200 level and at least one course must be at the 300 or 400 level. Courses must be chosen from at least two different departments.

RELG 115 Introduction to the Bible (4 credits)
HIST 201 European Civilization I, to 1492 (4 credits)
ART 201 Ancient to Gothic Art History (4 credits)
ENGL 241 Classical Mythology and Literature (4 credits)
PHIL 325 The Good Life: Ancient Greek and Hellenistic Philosophy (4 credits)
RELG 303 History of Christianity (4 credits)

This cluster provides a rich interdisciplinary experience for students with interest in and curiosity about ancient and medieval literature and culture and the origins of philosophy and Christianity.


LITERATURE AND CULTURE

At least one 200-level literature and culture course:

At least one 300-level American or British history course:

Students with a passion for social justice, multi-culturalism, and international studies will find this cluster especially valuable.


AMERICAN LITERATURE

This cluster enriches students’ understanding of both the literary arts and the history and culture and United States.

This cluster offers a rich interdisciplinary experience for students intrigued by the interconnections between religion and literature, interested in the history of religion and global religions, and looking to deepen their own spiritual experience.


SPANISH AND LINGUISTICS

Courses required for the cluster:

A student must take 12 hours:

Any two sequential Spanish courses (prefix SPAN)* (8 credits) AND
ENGL 351 History of the English Language (4 credits)

*The student’s point of entry into the sequence will depend on the student’s previous training in Spanish and will determine which two courses will satisfy the cluster.

This cluster is designed for students interested in exploring the linguistic, historical, and cultural aspects of the Spanish and English languages.

This cluster is designed as an exploration of the foundations of the language arts, particularly effective for an elementary education student who would benefit from a general background in the language arts would also be effective and attractive for the non-English major looking to experience three key components of English studies: literary interpretation, writing, and language study we do not count Children’s Literature and Adolescent Literature as electives in the major, these are valid courses education students can bring to this cluster—in much the same sense that clusters can have interdisciplinary courses in them.
