A Note From KMSC Faculty Advisor Mark Heistad

As many KMSC listeners know, a new radio station has gone on the air at 88.1FM and that’s causing reception problems for some KMSC listeners.

This is something we have known was coming and are working on a plan to move KMSC to a new spot on the FM dial. The problem is that the new radio station’s decision to go on the air came on rather short notice.

We have an application into the Federal Communications Commission to move KMSC to 92.9FM and hope to hear back on that in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, FCC regulations require KMSC to go off the air. We will do that Saturday night, February 9, after the Morningside basketball games.

The folks at the new radio station, KFHC, have agreed to allow KMSC to come back on the air temporarily for all the GPAC and NAIA basketball games later this month and next month. With any luck, we may be back on the air on 92.9 by then.

Here’s the background on the situation.

KMSC is a Class D radio station. That’s a classification the FCC eliminated many years ago. The FCC allowed KMSC and some other Class D radio stations to stay on the air with the provision that we not interfere with any other station. That is exactly the situation we have now.

KMSC’s programming is always available on the web and that will continue. The web address is webs.morningside.edu/kmsc. We will continue to stream all regular KMSC programming including play by play of the remaining regular season basketball games and then we will be back on the air for the post season games.

We are confident KMSC will return to the air at a new spot on the FM band soon.
